Strength/Resistance training is the key to shaping up your body and ensuring optimal weight loss, this is because it changes your body composition. By strength training you will increase your lean muscle, thus increasing your fat burning sites. This is something you may have heard talked about; it is termed raising your metabolism.

When you engage in cardiovascular exercise you will burn more fat if you have more lean muscle. Remember it is muscle that burns fat. When you are training at a moderate rate and your body goes into fat burning mode, (this takes until the 20 minute mark of exercising, fat metabolism is a slow process) your fat cells release free fatty acids into the blood stream, they are then taken into the muscle and burnt as fuel. Each extra 1kg of muscle burns an extra 200-calories/840-kilojoules daily, even while you sleep!

If you have a look around any gym there are people who you see weight training six days a week, every week, but their body shape seems to never change. This is because of two reasons

1. They do not train hard enough as they don’t train to exhaustion. Most people don’t even feel any discomfort whilst lifting weights. Weight training needs to be done properly in order to gain results; your muscle needs to come under stress. The weight chosen needs to be heavy enough that you are just able to finish any given set.
2. Most people don’t change their program. Your body has the ability to adapt to anything that you perform; this is why everything gets easier upon repetition. If you change your program every 10-12 weeks, your body will not get a chance to adapt to the routine, thus you will gain better results.

Strength training is also a fantastic way to look lean and healthy, giving your body the fit and healthy shape you desire. Let’s not forget that strength training can help you in everyday life also. Be it lifting that box from the top shelf that you would never have been able to lift before, or simply being able to lift your body weight out of the lounge chair.
